When @SarahHuckabee talks about taking on the media as reason to elect her governor, I wonder if she’s talking about all 2,000-plus Arkansans that make up the media here.
Is she talking about the newspaper publisher in Yell County who donated newspaper racks for students and teachers to safely manage homework during the COVID crisis? The single mother and foster parent who is dutifully chronicling the epidemic and its toll?
What about the Little Rock TV anchor earning national accolades for opioid awareness or the other who takes time to read to local students? Is the reporter attacked while covering protests in downtown LR “the media” she wants to take on?
Is it the newspaper publisher that gives free popcorn to all his subscribers? The carrier who wakes up at 1 am or the press operator who’s just then going to bed? The meteorologists in Jonesboro whose tornado coverage saved lives?
Is she ready to “take on” the media that will make her today’s main story? The media that goes to the same stores, has kids at the same schools and attends the same churches as everybody else?
The professionals in the media industry in Arkansas are your neighbors, and hers. They provide a vital service. They tell the stories of their communities and are essential to those communities and our state.
They aren’t the enemy. They’re the best friends this republic has.
