I& #39;ve seen this secondhand with other friends in this industry who are WoC, but I& #39;m beginning to realize for myself that some opportunities are only available to bloviating white men and it is crushing
My name is printed on the masthead every month, yet I can& #39;t make half of what a more privileged writer can. I have to argue for scraps ($50 here and there) and it is absolutely insulting
The publication is @ChicagoMag, I don& #39;t care anymore
This summer I was recruited onto a journalism project ( @PrairieMuseums) associated with @ChicagoMag and was told I was invited because there weren& #39;t enough POC on the team. I have never been told I was diversity hire to my face, so this level of candor was galling
Me and two other writers of color were repeatedly condescended to and disrespected as part of the @PrairieMuseums project but that& #39;s a story for another time
To my knowledge, there are no full-time writers or editors of color on the @ChicagoMag currently. People of color only come into the org as low-wage interns, or fellows. That doesn& #39;t seem like a coincidence.
@ChicagoMag hemorrhages staffers of color. Maybe they should ask themselves why.
My writing on race is frequently tone-policed to accommodate the desires of the imagined white audience. I was told top editors did not like when I wrote about artists of color whose work centered race. They needed an extra reason to justify being included in the culture section.
I have a full-time salaried job and can stand to lose @ChicagoMag. More worried about the freelancers who rely on the magazine for their variable income, however little is being offered now
I don& #39;t mind if you share these tweets — in fact, please do. I have worked with some wonderful people there, but you can& #39;t change a dominant white culture from the bottom up. @ChicagoMag will need to hurt before they realize how much they& #39;ve hurt other people.
Also, I interviewed for an assistant editor position with @ChicagoMag early last year and was told the salary would be somewhere between $30,000 and $40,000. Lol! That& #39;s not livable!
To use real numbers, I am hearing a man I know made $1/word for his first story in print, which is thousands of dollars
