If you want to understand at least part of why it is so important for Trump that Roger Stone remain quiet about what happened in 2016, let's talk about the Stone search warrant affidavits, in particular document 29-7.
In May 2016, Jerome Corsi was in contact with (who I would argue is) the Russian Aras Agalarov. Zoom in on the attached image, and you can see the capital A in Agalarov peeking out of the beginning of two of the redactions.
Agalarov, you will remember, was ultimately behind Trump Jr.'s June 9, 2016 meeting with Russian lawyer Veselnitskaya, the "Russian adoptions" meeting I have argued was really about the Agalarov's relaying the Russian government's intent to charge Trump with human trafficking.
Agalarov was well-positioned to facilitate delivering this threat of prosecution because, according to the Mueller Report 2:27:112, Agalarov was in possession of claimed tapes of a "compromising" nature on Trump which were being held over his head until at least October 30, 2016.
Now, on May 17, 2016, Roger Stone asked Corsi to pass some of the communication with Agalarov over to Stone himself. See the attached from affidavit 29-7.
The Stone communication with Agalarov led to a dinner meeting between Stone, Corsi, and Agalarov the next evening on May 18, 2016.
If I am correct, this dinner is when the news of the Russian intent to prosecute was first delivered. Thus, Agalarov contacts Stone the next day to see if this information has been relayed to Trump, and to see what Trump's mood is in reaction to it.
As I have discussed elsewhere, the Russians wanted the Magnitsky sanctions removed as a condition for not prosecuting, and thus Stone and Agalarov continued communicating in an attempt to arrange a meeting with Trump so this could be discussed.
Shying away from the terrible optics of a meeting directly between Trump and the senior Russian Agalarov, it was arranged instead for these discussions to happen between their two sons Emin and Donald Trump, Jr. Thus you have the Veselnitskaya meeting happening two weeks later.
So, as I have argued, from at least this point onward, Trump was operating under the blackmail of possible Russian prosecution for human trafficking. To keep the public from learning about the fact or nature of this blackmail, Trump and the Russians turned to intermediates.
You can see this beginning to unfold in the Stone affidavits ten days after the Veselnitskaya meeting when Agalarov offers the services of, likely, Israeli intelligence operative Walter Soriano when he secretly visits the United States.
Part of what Soriano brings about is the start of the disinformation operation QAnon to blame the trafficking on Hillary Clinton and the Democrats. But, for now, we are mainly just discussing Stone, so I'll leave a further discussion of Soriano's role until a later date.
